Band Gift Ideas!

Due to popular demand, we have created a list of practical gift ideas that would be perfect for your band-loving students! These are great ideas for the holiday season or future birthdays.

Let me know if you have any questions about anything on the list (below or attached)!

All:
  • Music Stand for at-home practice (no more strained necks!)
  • Black Music Folder with Pencil Pocket (example)
  • Books of solo music specifically for your child’s instrument!
  • Classical, pop, rock, jazz, folk, etc.
    • If you’re not sure what music to pick, send a link to Mrs. Swann and she’ll let you know if the music is achievable for your child’s current playing ability! robin.swann@rbe.sk.ca
  • Tuner (phone apps work great for metronomes, not so much for tuning)
  • Novelty items: jewelry, keychains, artwork, t-shirts, stickers for cases, etc.
  • A cleaning through St. John’s Music or Long & McQuade. If your child is in Grade 7 or 8 and hasn’t had their instrument serviced since Grade 6, this is probably the most useful idea on the list!  Servicing is free if you are renting. Otherwise, see your specific instrument for an approximate price (prices will vary depends on the wear and tear on your individual instrument).

Winter Concert & Band Marks

1) Winter Concerts! (yes, that is a plural!)
Our winter concerts will be held on Wednesday, December 11 at Martin Collegiate!! Due to the growth in our band program, there will be two concerts in one evening!!
  • Grade 6s from Buck & Rosemont, all Grade 7s and Junior Jazz band are part of the 6:00pm concert (students please arrive at 5:30pm for warm-up).
  • Grade 6s from McLurg & Walker, all Grade 8s, and Senior Jazz band are part of the 7:30pm concert (students please arrive at 7:00pm for warm-up).

Uniform: students should be dressed in uniform, with their red shirts (coming soon), black pants/skirts, black socks and black shoes. If your student does not have their red band shirt yet it is because they are still on order. They will be handed out at a full band rehearsal pre-concert time.
Bakesale Fundraiser: at the concert, we will be having our traditional bake sale fundraiser in the front lobby.  Please bring one dozen of your favorite treats on a tray/plate that you don’t need back (no nuts please!).  All baking will be sold for $5.00 per dozen.  Parents and students can drop their baking at the table in the front lobby upon arrival to the concert.
We hope to see all of you at our first performance of the year!
Attendance: attendance at concerts is vital. Students rehearse weekly with all of their peers in full band and missing members during performances does affect the sound of the whole band. It’s like competing in a playoff game but some of your teammates are missing. If you have any concerns about attendance this night, please contact us with as much notice as possible.

2) Band Marks
A mark has been entered into PowerSchool for your perusal. This mark will not be included in final term grades but is useful for check-in purposes. Please contact us if you have any questions at all! If you are concerned about your child’s mark, there is plenty of time before report cards in January to bring it up.

As always, thank you for your continuing support of your child’s musical journey! The kids are doing a wonderful job and are very excited to perform for you in just a few weeks J

Grade 6-8 Updates & Adult Band Opportunity!

Hello Band Families,

With the long weekend approaching and no full band this week, I thought it would be an opportune time to send home a progress report for band AND an interesting opportunity for you parents/guardians!

Grade 6 Band: students should be:
  • very comfortable with p. 6 & 7
  • relatively comfortable with p. 8
  • and working and progressing through p. 9

If your student is excelling, feel free to move on through the book at a faster pace.

If your student is struggling, please encourage them to practice, practice, practice! If they’d like to listen to a recording of their songs, simply youtube “Standard of Excellence song name”. For example, “Standard of Excellence Au Clair De La Lune” and students can listen to/play along with a recording.

Please also don’t hesitant to contact us if you feel your child needs extra one-on-one help!

Grade 7 & 8 Repertoire:
Grade 7s are working on the following pieces: O Canada, Flash Point, Furiant, and a new piece to be handed out next full band.
Grade 8s are working on: O Canada, City at Dusk, Spirit of the Wolf, Celtic Air and Dance No. 3.

Grade 7 & 8 Achievement Charts:
Grade 7 & 8s will receive an achievement chart in their sectional by Oct 22. This is a list of pieces and scales selected from the methods books that students are expected to practice and play for their teacher during sectionals. These achievement charts are used both for assessment and as motivation to attend the Spring Trip as only those students who have completed their charts may attend the trip. Students have until April 30 to complete the chart.
  • Grade 7s require the RED Standard of Excellence Book 1.
  • Grade 8s required BOTH the RED Standard of Excellence Book 1 and the BLUE Standard of Excellence Book 2.
  • Books can be purchased from either St. Johns Music or Long & McQuade Music. Cost is approximately $10-14. You don’t need the ‘enhanced’ version with the DVD unless you would like it!

Band T-Shirts: students will soon be fitted for their band tshirts and a new fee will appear on your account. Your student keeps their band shirt for all Grade 6-8 performances. Please let us know if you have any questions about this!

Adult Beginner Band (new!): The Saskatchewan Band Association (SBA) has decided to pilot a beginner band program for adults in Regina! Many you may never have had the opportunity to be in band, and after seeing what your children are accomplishing you may have had a desire to learn an instrument yourself! This program is designed for adults that have never learned how to play an instrument before or learned to play one a long time ago and have since forgotten. If you are interested in signing up or learning more, please visit:

As always, please feel free to keep an open line of communication with us!

Grade 7 & 8 - Jazz Band!

Dear Grade 7 & 8 Band Students and Parents,

The Martin Area Jazz Bands are extra-curricular bands that meet once a week after school to learn how to play jazz music in a variety of styles. Students will gain valuable skills in improvisation, music theory, and playing in a smaller group that’s different from what they experience in concert band.

There will be a Junior Jazz Band and Senior Jazz Band this year since we’ve had enough interest! Typically Grade 7 students will play in the Junior band and Grade 8 students in the Senior band. There may be some Grade 7 students who are able to advance into the Senior group and some Grade 8s students, such as those learning a second instrument, joining the Junior group, but we will make these decisions on a case by case basis. The Junior band will be taught by Ms. Stetner and the Senior band will be taught by Mr. Frank.

Rehearsals will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 at Ruth M. Buck School. The Junior band will rehearse on Day 4s and the Senior band on Day 5s. Students will need to be picked up at 5:00 or be given permission to walk home after rehearsals. The Day 1-5 calendar can be found on Regina Public Schools’ website.

It is expected that students and parents will make arrangements to be able to attend jazz band for the whole school year and that if complications with other activities arise, the student will make an effort to still attend jazz and notify their band teachers of any conflicts well in advance.

Each student should bring with them their instrument, a pencil, and their folder (which we will provide) to each rehearsal. It is necessary that each student play their main instrument unless approval is given by the teacher to play a new instrument. We will be working on advanced repertoire in jazz band that will be beyond the level of a student who is starting a new instrument. If your child plays drums, piano, guitar, or bass in addition to their regular band instrument, we’d be happy to have them join on one of those instruments.

The first rehearsals will take place on October 7th (Jr band) and October 8th (Sr band). Please return the physical note sent home today OR EMAIL us if you choose to participate in this year’s Martin Jazz Bands! If you EMAIL us, please let me know if (a) your child has permission to walk home after jazz, (b) you will be picking your child up from jazz band, (c) your child has a ride home organized with another parent and if so, which parent, and/or, (d) you need help organizing a ride to jazz for your child.

We look forward to working with your child and helping to improve their musicianship through jazz!

Regards,

Grade 6 - Welcome to Band!

Hello Grade 6 Band Families!

Welcome to the Martin Area Band program! A package of information will be sent home with your student today – we hope they had a fantastic first day back to school!

I thought it would be helpful to email out the information too, in case the band note gets lost in the shuffle of the busy first days of school.

All of our updates and information is also always posted to our blog: https://martinareaband.blogspot.com/

Topics you will find in the package (attached) include:
  • How to obtain an instrument
  • Other supplies required including the red method book
  • When band starts and a schedule for Sept-Dec
    • **The Headstart Clinic on Sept 18, 4:30-7:30 at McLurg School**
    • Winter Concert Date: December 11
  • An instrument loan form for families who are renting an instrument through the school (bass clarinet, french horn, euphonium, tuba)

Students do not need to bring their instruments to school until the Headstart Clinic. We also recommend that they do not open and try to play their instruments before learning valuable beginner information at the clinic.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time with any questions or concerns.

We are looking forward to meeting the new young musicians in our program and exploring the world of music with them!

Spring Concert and other news

SPRING CONCERT 2019
And other news!!

Hello Band Families!

Our final concert of the year will be held on WEDNESDAY, May 22 at Martin Collegiate, 7:00pm.  All students should arrive no later than 6:30pm with uniforms, instruments, and prepared music.

As in the past, we will be having our traditional BAKE SALE in the front lobby.  Band students can bring one dozen of their favorite treats (no nuts!) on a disposable plate or tray to the lobby when they arrive at the concert.  All bake sale items will sell for $5.00 per dozen.

Other news:
  • We will have Summer Band Camp information at the concert for anyone wishing to attend.  This is a wonderful opportunity and an excellent way for students to learn new musical and technical skills, make new friends, have fun, and improve sound and technique on their particular instrument.
  • Soon the students will be given new band registration forms for the upcoming year.  They are due back to Mrs. Strykiwsky, Mrs. Swann or Ms. Stetner (or the school secretary) by June 13. Please do not include money with the form.  Payment for band students that are bussed to full band or using school division instruments is not due until the end of September.  Just fill out the form and return!  Our hope is to see everyone back next year!!!!
  • Anyone using a school owned instrument should have it returned to the Martin stage immediately following our spring concert on the 22nd in order for summer cleaning and repair.

See you at the concert on Wednesday, May 22!!!!

Grade 7/8 Trip Info!

GRADE 7/8 BAND TRIP!

Dear Martin Area Band Families,

Our Martin Area Grade 7/8 band students have worked hard this year so we are celebrating by taking them on a well-deserved, one-day spring tour to Yorkton. The trip is planned for Tuesday, May 14.  Students will be performing for McLurg School before leaving the city.  After arriving in Yorkton, our students will have the opportunity to work with one of the band directors in the city, Ms. Kelsey Kuz.  We will also be going to the Gallagher Centre for some swim time and eating supper in Yorkton before returning to Regina by 8:30pm.  A complete itinerary of our day’s events will follow shortly.

Cost:  The cost per band student will be $45.00.  Payment for this trip will be set up online as this is the preferred method.  If you must send cash or a cheque, please label with students name and send in a sealed bag/envelope (cheques made payable to your school).  This includes two charter buses to and from Yorkton, our clinic, Gallagher Centre, and snacks for the students.  Everyone will need to bring a bag lunch, and money for supper.
***All money, consent and waiver form, and medical forms are due no later than Monday, May 6 (full band day).***

Expectations:
Over the next month, students should be preparing their music for the trip.  All students should be ready to perform all of their music for the school concerts.  We trust our students will be fine ambassadors for not only our schools but also the city.  We expect their performances and behavior to be exemplary.  When traveling with a large group it is extremely important that each student take responsibility for being on their best behavior AT ALL TIMES.

Parent Help:  We require parents to assist in chaperoning.  We especially require parents with a medical background or First Aid training. Regina Public School Board policy requires that all parent volunteers complete a criminal records check (recently changed to Police Information Check, and can now be applied for online).  Please let us know as soon as possible if you are free that day and would like to come along!

If you have any questions or concerns whatsoever, please contact us anytime:

If you are available and would like to come, please email or fill out and return the bottom portion of physical note sent home with students. Please note that the process of getting a PIC approved from the Police Service, to School Division Office, to your school office can take 3-4 weeks.

FOOD REQUIREMENTS – if your child has allergies or any other food requirements, please let us know so we can look at providing an alternate lunch for them that they can eat.

EXPECTATIONS – over the next few weeks, students should be preparing all of their music in order for successful concerts.  We trust that all of our students will represent our area of the city in the best way possible during all activities.  When traveling with a large group it is extremely important that each student take responsibility for being on their best behaviour.

DUE – Money and permission forms are due no later than Tuesday, April 30.  This is a full band day, so please send with your son/daughter if you’re turning in cash or cheque.
